-Earl Thomas was let go by the Ravens the other day. He threw a punch at teammate and the other starter at safety Chuck Clark, which appeared to be the last straw. This story here, from CBSSports.com, details more about how a lot of Ravens players wanted Thomas gone. That tells me that Thomas won’t have a huge market, but there’ll be a few teams willing to take a chance on him. I think it’ll be more of a Prove It type of deal, with escalators and such, but I imagine he’ll be signed before the season starts.
-Brett Brown has been fired as the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers after they got swept 4-0 in the NBA Playoffs. They didn’t have one of their major guys, as Ben Simmons was hurt, but someone has to take the fall for another disappointing season and the coach is the easiest scapegoat. And to be fair, Brown wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire with his coaching anyway.
-Marshal Yanda retired from the NFL last season, where he was an offensive lineman. He tipped the scales at 300+ lbs. Now, look at him. When linemen retire and get back to a healthy weight by dropping 100lbs. or so is always crazy. Good for him.
-Giannis Antetokounmpo has won the 2019/2020 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Giannis averaged 29.5 points, 13.6 rebounds, and 5.6 assists so he’s also the frontrunner to be the MVP this season as well. He already won MVP last year so he’d go back to back there, as well as add Defensive MVP. About the only thing left would be to go win Finals MVP. It’ll be a while before we see if he does that, though.
-Marcus Morris plays for the Clippers, who were blowing out the Mavericks last night. Towards the end of the game, he stepped on the already injured foot of Luka Doncic. It looked intentional to me but it’s just close enough to raise doubt. I don’t think the NBA will take action because of how close it is but they probably should.
It’s the unnatural step in the Luka play that gets me. He extends his left foot further than he normally would. It looks intentional to me. I think he should be suspended.
NBA Playoffs 2020
Toronto, Boston, and Miami have all already advanced. Utah is up 3-2 after Denver came back to win yesterday. The Clippers lead 3-2 after blowing out Dallas yesterday. Milwaukee leads 3-1 and play Orlando today at 4pm EST. Houston and Oklahoma City are tied 2-2 and play today at 6:30pm EST. And the Lakers lead 3-1 over Portland and play tonight at 9pm EST.
Damian Lillard is out for tonight’s game against the Lakers so the Lakers should be huge favorites. I would think the Bucks eliminate the Magic and Houston should beat the Thunder but that’s a toss-up. The playoffs have delivered some big moments so far and should give us even more as we go on.
