The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from WWE RAW 09/07/2020

By: Frank Hyden

RAW was last night and it had some good stuff but it also had a lot of bad stuff. Let’s get to the rundown.

BAD- Randy Orton promo, Drew McIntyre attack

The show opened with Orton coming out to do a promo. The promo was fine, your typical heel stuff, but then this annoying siren started blaring. For a second I thought “Oh man, wouldn’t it be crazy if that was Scott Steiner showing up?”. But alas, it was Drew McIntyre driving an ambulance into the arena and attacking Orton. Isn’t he supposed to have a fractured jaw or something? Yet he’s talking like normal all fine and everything? Also, Drew gave Orton a Claymore and then left. What the hell? I know he kept hitting him with Claymores throughout the night to repeat what Orton did to him, but not even a movie director would care about that kind of symbolism. It would make more sense if he just beat the hell out of Orton right here.

GOOD- The Hurt Business beat Apollo Crew, Ricochet, and Cedric Alexander

Cedric turned on his team and finally joined The Hurt Business. Well actually, they drug it out a bit so they could do an official ceremony later but it was already done pretty much. All I can say is, finally.

GOOD/BAD- The Street Profits beat Andrade and Angel Garza

There wasn’t much to this match. Garza walked out on Andrade and Montez Ford hit a skyhigh frogsplash for the pin. I guess this means a singles push for Garza but we’ll have to wait and see. After the match, the Smackdown tag champs Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura challenged The Street Profits to a match next week.

GOOD/BAD- Peyton Royce beat Billie Kay

They both got new entrance music and outfits, which were okay, and this was a short match but Royce won and they hugged afterwards. Who knows what’s going to happen here? I don’t think WWE even knows what they’re doing longterm with most of their people.

GOOD/BAD- Asuka and Mickie James beat Natalya and Lana

I’m a big Asuka fan but I also like Mickie James and she’s been completely portrayed as no big deal. They don’t even show her entrance. The same goes for Natalya and Lana, they haven’t given them any time. The match was okay, Asuka made Lana tap with the Asuka Lock. At least they had Lana take the loss instead of Natalya. They also announced during this match that Asuka will defend her RAW Women’s Title against Mickie James next week on RAW, not on the Clash of Champion. What the hell? That means that Asuka probably wins in like 4 or 5 minutes. It would be great if that match headlined RAW but they’ll probably do some bullshit with McIntyre and Orton or maybe some more Mysterio family-Seth Rollins stuff. I’ve liked the Mysterio family-Rollins stuff, but a title match should always take precedence.

GOOD/BAD- The Hurt Business inducts Cedric Alexander, faces interrupt

Cedric talked a little about why he joined THB and they gave him a shirt. Then, The Viking Raiders walked out with Apollo Crews and Ricochet and they brawled before a commercial break. Of course, when we come back from commercial it’s an 8-man tag match. The match was good because there was 8 guys involved and they’re all either solid workers or good to great. So there was some good action. The finish came when everyone was hitting big moves, finishing with Cedric hitting Ricochet with a Michinoku Driver for what they called a three count but Ricochet actually kicked out. Ivar had hurt himself doing a dive to the outside, you could tell immediately because he started making the X with his wrists. So I’m guessing the ref counted 3 because he was hurt and they wanted to finish the match. I don’t know, though, but the ref was right there and still counted three. They showed a replay of it and Ricochet clearly raised his shoulder before the three count.

BAD- Randy Orton vs. Keith Lee ends in a DQ

Lee blocked the RKO a few times, but Orton hit him with it finally. But then Drew McIntyre came in and hit Orton with the Claymore for the DQ. What crap. Why even have Lee in this spot? They could have put any number of other people in this exact spot and gotten the same result. Everyone knew that McIntyre was going to interfere, or at least that something was going to happen to mess with the finish.

BAD/UGLY- RAW Underground shit, handicap matches and Drew McIntyre strikes again

They had been hyping Kevin Owens vs. Aleister Black in RAW Underground all night, so what do they do? They fight for maybe 30 second before cutting to a break. That’s one of WWE’s most annoying habits, it’s just so frigging dumb when they do that. I don’t know why they think that’s a good idea, who thinks that’s a good idea? Anyway, back from break and we get Shayna Baszler vs. The Riott Squad in a handicap match. I don’t like handicap matches as a general rule because they make the team look weak. Nia Jax was outside talking trash to Shayna and Liv Morgan takes advantage of the distraction and rolls up Baszler for the win. After that, KO and Black fought some more before a big brawl broke out and we go to Nia Jax vs. The Riott Squad in a handicap match. This was even worse as they protected Nia from getting beat for some reason as Retribution played with the lights and then had a video package saying they would take WWE over or something like that. At least they finally talked. At this point, I was so disgusted with the whole show that I was ready to change the channel. You protect Nia Jax but have Shayna get rolled up? Then, after that, you have the KO-Aleister fight (that’s lasted over like 3 segments) end as that Dabbo Kato schlub lays them both out? What. The. Hell? I don’t know, maybe that Dabbo guy is actually okay and I’m being too harsh but what a stupid finish there. Things got even worse, though, as McIntyre attacked Orton backstage again and gave him a third Claymore. Yawn.

GOOD- Dominik Mysterio beat Murphy in a street fight

The whole Mysterio family was there for this one, and Dominik hit some big moves. He flew off a row of the screens in the Thunderdome onto Murphy and then he later hit a sunset flip bomb off the apron through a table that had been set up. The match ended with the whole Mysterio family hitting Murphy with kendo sticks until he tapped out. This was a good finish to an overall bad show. Maybe I’m being too harsh but damn, this was a slog. It doesn’t help that RAW is 3 hours, which is an hour too long. That wouldn’t be as much of a problem if they didn’t have the same damn people showing up in multiple segments . I don’t mean for parts where they’re hyping up their match later with a quick promo or something. I mean, did we really need to see 3 separate segments of McIntyre hitting Orton with a Claymore? Did we really need to have that Kevin Owens vs. Aleister Black fight spread out into 3 segments? And then it didn’t even get a damn finish. There’s other, more pressing, problems with the show that need to be dealt with first but some of these repetitive segments need to be eliminated.
