Tatiana Maslany is the new She-Hulk. She’s a talented actress and I hope she does a good job in the role. However, I don’t have very high hopes for this show, despite She-Hulk being my favorite character in comics. The biggest reason is it seems that this show is going to goofy and wacky and all that crap. If it were actually funny, it wouldn’t be as bad. However, you know they’re going to shoehorn in a bunch of woke “comedy”. That and they’ll probably mimic some of Dan Slott’s run on She-Hulk and maybe John Byrne’s Sensational She-Hulk run. I don’t want some wacky cases and courtroom hijinks, that shit sounds terrible. I don’t want a green Ally McBeal, that defeats the entire purpose of having a Hulk character. Ally McBeal was fine from what I remember, but why would you go to the cost of CGI-ing up Maslany if she’s just going to be cracking jokes or being the straight man for all the wacky characters she defends? If you’re going to do that, why even have She-Hulk at all?
It’s like with the Professor Hulk stuff in Avengers: Endgame. They spent a lot of money making up Mark Ruffalo so he can sit there in the diner and have comedy moments or when they were in the base or whatever. But they also knew that movie was going to make a ton of money so they could do that. It’s like with the Call of Duty games. They’re always wasting a bunch of money overpaying some Hollywood scriptwriter to come in and write their latest B-movie action story. I don’t mean that as an insult either, I don’t expect or even really want Call of Duty to have a great story. In fact, when they try to write a great story (the Treyarch Black Ops games mainly) they come up with a plot so stupid and convoluted that you stop paying attention 5 minutes in because it doesn’t make any sense. Black Ops 3 had a story so stupid that it’s one of the worst stories ever in a big name video game.
Anyway, I don’t see why Disney would want to spend a bunch of money creating a big green character who’s just going to be making jokes. So that makes me think that they’re going to have her be Jennifer Walters most of the time. That would be really cool if they did it more akin to the original Savage She-Hulk comic, where she struggled to control her anger and things were done in a more serious way. However, a writer from Rick and Morty, Jessica Gao, is leading the writer’s room. And the director for several episodes is Kat Coiro, who’s directed episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Mick, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and other mostly comedy shows. That tells me that she’ll probably be Jen mostly but everything will be played for laughs. That’s not necessarily horrible, but I don’t think the show will actually be funny. If this is what the show is, I hope it’s funny, I hope I’m wrong. Maslany is known as a really good dramatic actress so I’m hoping she gets to showcase her dramatic acting skills on this show. We’ll see. I’ll try to be cautiously optimistic.
