-Week 2 of the NFL season is almost complete and there was some big happenings yesterday. Unfortunately, a lot of it was injuries as several big names went down. However, let’s start with the almost unbelievable choke by the Atlanta Falcons as they lost to the Dallas Cowboys. At one point, they had a 99.9% win probability. They were up 9 points with 4 minutes to go and they had to punt. So Dallas goes and scores a touchdown. There’s only a few minutes left so they have to try an onside kick. Greg Zuerlein kicks a little spinner that’s taking a while to get to the required 10 yards before Dallas can touch it. There’s a handful of Falcons players just standing there looking at the ball at it slowly goes 10 yards and Dallas jumps on it. What the hell was that? Then they slip on coverage and Dallas is in great position, run out the clock, kick the field goal and win. What a gag job. That’s disgusting. I hate to call for anyone to be fired but it’s hard to not call for heads to roll. You have players who apparently didn’t know that they could jump on the ball before it goes 10 yards and you have coaches who apparently didn’t teach the players that. It’s astounding.
-There was also another choke job Sunday night, but this one came up one yard short. The Seattle Seahawks were up 35-23 after Russell Wilson’s 5th touchdown throw of the night. There was only 4:32 left on the clock at this point. Cam Newton then led a touchdown drive and there was a little over 2 minutes left on the clock. Seattle couldn’t do jack and tried a deep pass on 3rd and 1 so they had to punt. New England drove but Cam was stopped on the 1 yard line as time expired. I suppose it’s all in the results because the Falcons are being killed for gagging away a 9 point lead in 4 minutes when the Seahawks almost gagged away a 12 point lead in 4 minutes.
-In other news, the Kansas City Chiefs came back to win over the Los Angeles Chargers as Harrison Butker hit 3 straight 50+ yard field goals. The first one of 53 yards didn’t count because of a false start, so it got moved back to 58 yards. He made that one but it didn’t count because L.A. called a timeout. And finally, he made it again and the Chiefs got the walk-off. Butker had also nailed another 58 yarder earlier in the game. What an absolute weapon for a team that quite frankly doesn’t need it.
-The injury bug hit hard yesterday. Among the notable names who were injured are Saquon Barkley, Christian McCaffery, Drew Lock, Jimmy Garroppolo, Nick Bosa, David Montgomery, Anthony Barr, Malik Hooker, Courtland Sutton, Raheem Mostert, Davante Adams, Darius Slay, Will Fuller, Sammy Watkins, and a whole lot more. It feels like 100 guys got hurt, it was nuts. Hell, I might even have left some big names out there were so many. And a lot of the guys who got hurt are valuable contributors.
