The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from WWE Clash of Champions 2020

By: Frank Hyden

Clash of Champions was yesterday and (almost) all the title were on the line. Let’s get to the rundown.

GOOD- Cesaro/Shinsuke Nakamura beat Lucha House Party to retain Smackdown Tag Titles

This was a pretty good match, no surprise given the guys involved. They didn’t do the Lucha House Party breakup here, so they must be saving that for Smackdown Friday. There was a bunch of near falls at the end of the match to build the hype before the champs got the win.

GREAT- Sami Zayn beats AJ Styles and Jeff Hardy to win the WWE Intercontinental Title

This was an incredible match that delivered what you expected. There were huge bumps and some crazy moments, including where Zayn handcuffed a ladder to Hardy’s ear. There was a big swanton through Zayn on another ladder and Hardy pushed off a ladder to the floor below. These guys gave it their all and it made for a fantastic match. Zayn won when he handcuffed Styles to a ladder and climbed up and grabbed both belts. Words can’t really do this justice, you kind of have to see it for yourself. This match was great.

GOOD- Asuka beats Zelina Vega to retain her WWE RAW Women’s Title

This wasn’t a really long match but it was laid out fairly well. No one expected Vega to win but she performed well and looked good. Asuka made Vega tap to the Asuka Lock.

GOOD- Bobby Lashley beat Apollo Crew to retain his United States Championship

This was a solid match, nothing great but not bad by any means. Lashley won when he locked in the Hurt Lock.

GOOD- The Street Profits beat Angel Garza and Andrade to retain their WWE RAW Tag Team Titles

It appeared that Garza got hurt during the match and they had to call an end to things, because when Andrade got pinned he actually kicked out before the 3. They’ll probably use that to extend this feud a little longer, unless Garza is seriously hurt.

GOOD/BAD- Bayley vs. Asuka ends in DQ

Bayley was supposed to face Nikki Cross but Cross wasn’t medically cleared. So Bayley issued an open challenge, which Asuka answered and started beating up Bayley. They brawled for a while until Bayley used her chair to DQ herself. Sasha Banks attacked Bayley with a kendo stick afterwards but Bayley ran away. Banks was still wearing the neck brace so hopefully they keep building the Bayley vs. Banks match up instead of rushing straight to it.

BAD/GOOD- Drew McIntyre beats Randy Orton to retain his WWE World Title, with help from a hundred people.

The match was actually kind of fun but damn, why did they have so many people interfere to attack Orton? You had The Big Show, Christian, and Shawn Michaels all interfere to help McIntyre. Big Show chokeslammed Orton through the announce table, stopping Orton from punting McIntyre. Christian interfered and stopped Orton when he had the advantage over McIntyre. Shawn Michaels superkicked Orton after he beat up McIntyre some more. Finally, after all that, McIntyre slammed the door shut on the ambulance and won the match. This whole match made McIntyre look weak. All this interference should have happened in a blowoff type match where Christian or somebody who can’t wrestle anymore was fighting Orton and then you have tons of interference to have Orton lose. This shouldn’t have happened for the World Champion. It’s just odd.

GOOD- Roman Reigns beats Jey Uso to retain his WWE Universal Title

This was more about the story of Roman establishing dominance and demanding that Jey call him the Tribal Chief. Roman was really heeling it up here, refusing to go for the pin until Jey said it. Finally, Jimmy came out and was going to throw the towel in but Jey begged him not to. Roman beat Jey until Jimmy finally threw the towel in. This was good, but it would have been better with blood. This is where the PG stuff bites WWE in the ass. If Jey was laying there, all bloodied and battered, that would be much more effective at getting across that he’s been destroyed. As it is, there’s nothing to differentiate this beatdown from the one Cesaro might give Gran Metalik or Sheamus would give Jeff Hardy. Sometimes you need some blood to spice things up. You could definitely overdo it so you don’t want to use blood too often but there’s no better way to make something stand out than with a little color. This was still really good, I don’t want to give the wrong impression, I just think it could have been more. This was a great way to end the night.
