RAW last night was the conclusion of the 2020 WWE Draft and it had some big changes, both expected and unexpected. Let’s get to the rundown.
Here’s the draft results that took place over the course of the night.
RAW- Those staying on RAW are- Randy Orton, Charlotte Flair, Retribution, Keith Lee, R-Truth, Dabba-Kato, Titus O’Neil, and Peyton Royce. Those moving to RAW are- The Fiend, Braun Strowman, Matt Riddle, Jeff Hardy, Alexa Bliss, Elias, Lacey Evans, Sheamus, and Nikki Cross
Smackdown- Those staying on Smackdown are- Bayley, Daniel Bryan, Lars Sullivan, King Corbin, Sami Zayn, Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro, and Carmella. Those moving to Smackdown are- The Street Profits, Kevin Owens, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode, Apollo Crew, and Aleister Black
GOOD/BAD- Randy Orton and WWE World Champion Drew McIntyre brawl
Honestly, I just wasn’t feeling this. It was okay and I liked McIntyre interrupting Orton’s promo before they brawled but this just felt so formulaic. There wasn’t any life to it. Orton pinning McIntyre in a tag match has nothing to do with their title match.
GOOD- Kevin Owens beat Aleister Black in a No DQ match
This was a pretty good No DQ match, though it had some moments where the guys take a long time to set up the next spot, which always looks odd and slows things down. KO hit the Stunner and powerbombed Black through a table to get the win.
GOOD- Miz TV brawls
The Miz and John Morrison talked with Mandy Rose and Dana Brooke, then Natalya and Lana and they all brawled. After they took care of that, Lars Sullivan came out and destroyed Morrison. This stuff was fine. I like Miz and Morrison and I know they’re just trying to get Sullivan over so I’m okay with all this stuff.
GOOD- AJ Styles beat Jeff Hardy and Seth Rollins
This match wasn’t nearly as good as it could be, given the three men involved, but it was still really good. The finish came when Elias returned and blasted his guitar over Hardy. He said he blamed Hardy for the car accident that injured him, though I thought it was actually Sheamus who did that and blamed Hardy? Anyway, I guess it doesn’t matter now?
BAD/GOOD- Mandy Rose and Dana Brooke beat Lana and Natalya
The match was eh, okay. It wasn’t necessarily bad, it was just okay. After the loss, Natalya broke up with Lana. So they put Rose in another tag team after splitting up her old one with a hot feud that was really good but Rose’s push fizzled shortly thereafter? And they break up an existing team before they had a chance to go anywhere?
GOOD- Angel Garza beats Andrade, The Fiend and Alexa Bliss attack
Garza and Andrade weren’t allowed much time but they made the most of the time they did have. I’d like to see a match between them get more time down the road. After Garza won, Bliss and The Fiend attacked Andrade and Zelina Vega, who was commentating ringside. I like everyone involved in this and it was a different pairing we haven’t seen before so I liked this.
GOOD- New Day beat Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode
This match was given time and it delivered. The outcome was clear before the match even began, there was no way New Day was losing. Which is one of the things I’m really getting tired of in wrestling, how a new champ almost always holds the title for at least 3 months and usually longer. It removes all drama from these early matches. You knew there was no way New Day was losing. Anyway, back to the match, these guys went all out and it was very exciting.
GOOD- Ricochet lies, he cheats, he steals vs. Cedric Alexander
Ricochet proposed a match where if he wins, The Hurt Business leaves him alone but if he loses, he joins THB. Ricochet did the Eddie Guerrero bit with the chair, where he throws the chair at the opponent and acts like he got hit with it, and got the DQ win to outsmart THB. This was a fun way to end their feud.
GOOD- Lana wins the Women’s Battle Royal
I liked this battle royal, it had some fun moments and an unexpected finish. You had Shayna Baszler help eliminate her own tag partner in Nia Jax, The Riott Squad eliminated Bianca Belair, and it came down to Lacey Evans and Natalya. However, Lana wasn’t eliminated, she was just put through the announce table for the 90th week in a row, and she snuck up behind Natalya after Natalya had eliminated Evans and won the match to get a title shot at RAW Women’s Champion Asuka.
BAD- Orton and McIntyre brawl more
Who gives a crap about this? They found these guys fighting backstage and they did the whole “can’t keep them apart” bit where they kept brawling and re-engaging. It just felt pointless. It’s like WWE couldn’t stand the idea of the show ending with Lana winning the battle royal so they had to shoehorn in this brawl. One of the things AEW does better than WWE is that they don’t force their top guys into the final segment just because. It would have been better and more interesting to end the show with Lana winning. Just like last week, it would have been better and more interesting to see the reveal of Ali as the leader of Retribution end the show. Which they’ve already messed that up by not following up on it. The WWE World Champion doesn’t have to be in the final segment of the night. Whoever’s facing or feuding with the WWE World Champion doesn’t have to be in the final segment. This just felt so forced it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. What a shit way to end the show, with a brawl between two guys we’ve seen brawl a dozen times or so.
