The Top 25 saw some more big upsets, including a controversial call in Bloomington. Let’s get to the rundown.
#1 Clemson beat Syracuse 47-21. This was actually a 27-21 game at one point before the Tigers defense turned it on and the game turned into a runaway.
#2 Alabama beat Tennessee 48-17. The story here was Alabama losing the dynamic speedster Jaylen Waddle to a fractured ankle on the opening kickoff. At halftime Nick Saban said Waddle was done for the season. He also made a comment about how you’re not supposed to bring kicks out when you’re really deep in the endzone, which is some bullshit on Saban’s part. There was no need to say that.
#3 Notre Dame beat Pittsburgh 45-3. This was just a total drubbing. The Irish played well against the well-regarded Panthers defense.
#5 Ohio State beat Nebraska 52-17. Justin Fields went 20-21 passing with 2 touchdowns throwing and 1 running as they dominated the Cornhuskers.
#6 Oklahoma State beat #17 Iowa State 24-21. The Cowboys defense stepped up and slowed down the Cyclones enough to get the win.
Indiana beat #8 Penn State 36-35 in OT. Plenty of controversy here as Indiana let Penn State score with a minute to go, marched down the field to tie the game, then went for 2 in overtime. It looked like quarterback Michael Penix Jr. came up short on the 2 point conversion attempt but it was ruled good and upheld so the Hoosiers pull off the massive upset.
#9 Cinncinati beat #16 SMU 42-13. Desmond Ridder rushed for 3 touchdowns, one a 91 yarder, and threw for another as the Bearcats blew them out.
#11 Miami beat Virginia 19-14. The Hurricanes got the home win in a low-scoring affair.
#12 BYU beat Texas State 52-14. Zach Wilson tossed 4 touchdowns for the Cougars as the romped.
#14 North Carolina beat #23 NC State 48-21. The Tarheels had 2 100-yard rushers and also had 4 touchdowns on the ground as the broke the game open in the 3rd quarter.
#14 Wisconsin beat Illinois 45-7. Graham Mertz threw 5 touchdowns for the Badgers in their season-opener.
#18 Michigan beat #21 Minnesota 49-24. The Wolverines had 258 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns on the ground at they beat down the Gophers.
Wake Forest beat #19 Virginia Tech 23-16. The only other upset of the week saw the Demon Deacons knock off the Hokies behind some good running.
#20 Kansas State beat Kansas 55-14. K-State just keeps rolling with this big win.
#22 Marshall beat Florida Atlantic 20-9. Grant Wells threw 2 touchdowns in the win.
#25 Coastal Carolina beat Georgia Southern 28-14. The Chanticleers are ranked for the first time in their history and they’ll stay ranked with this win.
