Smackdown this week featured some face to face showdowns of the champions involved in the Survivor Series matchups Sunday. Let’s get to the rundown.
GOOD/BAD- Opening segment then The New Day and The Street Profits beat Robert Roode and Dolph Ziggler, and Sami Zayn, and King Corbin
The Profits talked some with Big E backstage, then The New Day came to the ring and talked a bit. They were interrupted by Sami Zayn then King Corbin, who told them to leave. Roode and Ziggler then came out and said they should be champions. New Day got jumped, Profits made the save, and it turned into an 8-man tag match. Predictable, but there’s worse ways to go and the match was chaos, as you would expect. There was some fast action and Montez Ford won the match with his skyhigh Frog Splash.
GOOD- Otis and Bayley named to Team Smackdown and Natayla beat Tamina to join Team Smackdown
Adam Pearce named Otis and Bayley to Team Smackdown, which left 1 spot open on the women’s team, which Natalya filled when she beat Tamina in a really quick match. Bayley and Bianca Belair were on commentary. The Riott Squad joined them in the ring as all 5 celebrated, though somewhat reluctantly.
GOOD- Contract signing for Drew McIntyre vs. Roman Reigns
Each man talked some about their match Sunday. Reigns talked down to McIntyre while Drew told him he was going to beat him. McIntyre should absolutely beat Reigns. He’s stronger, he’s faster, he’s more athletic, he’s just the better wrestler. Of course, WWE loves them some Roman Reigns so I imagine he’ll take it. But at the same time, why would they have McIntyre win the belt Monday just to have him lose here? If they wanted Reigns to win, just keep the belt on Orton and do the title switch later. I imagine they’ll do some bullshit interference where Jey Uso attacks McIntyre or something like that.
GOOD- Murphy beat Seth Rollins
These guys had a good match, as you would expect. Rey, Dominik, and Aalyah Mysterio were at ringside cheering Murphy on. They went back and forth, at one point Murphy took a crazy bump where Rollins knocked him backwards off the top rope and Murphy went flying into the barricade. Rollins hit a Superplex and Murphy hit him with a bunch of jumping knees before hitting Murphy’s Law and pinning him.
GOOD- Asuka and Sasha Banks promo
Both champions squared off in a promo. I was glad to see Banks retain her edge and not revert to Generic Babyface character now that she’s a face. And Asuka cut her usual frenetic promo, dropping in some English catchphrases from other people. Carmella attacked Banks from behind and beat her up. Asuka just watched the whole thing go down.
GOOD- Daniel Bryan beat Jey Uso
This was another pretty good match. They hit all their spots and Bryan got backdropped through the announce table. They went back and forth before Bryan rolled up Uso to get the win. They made Uso look strong early and he physically dominated the match for the most part, but the crafty veteran Bryan was able to get the roll-up and the win. It’s probably safe to say we haven’t seen the last of this matchup. WWE accomplished what they set out to do, build hype for Survivor Series and have an entertaining show.
