The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from WWE Royal Rumble 2021

By: Frank Hyden

Royal Rumble 2021 featured the two big Rumble matches to decide who will headline WrestleMania this year? Who won? Let’s get to the rundown.

GOOD- Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax beat Charlotte Flair and Asuka to win the WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles

The only thing I didn’t really like about this match is that, once again, Charlotte dominated things. Asuka is the one who got double-teamed and sold, Charlotte’s the one who got the hot tag and cleared house and was taking both Baszler and Jax out until Ric Flair and Lacey Evans interfered and Charlotte was hit with some brass knuckles and got pinned. It’s ironic that she’s Ric Flair’s daughter but she’s much more like Hulk Hogan (or Stone Cold Steve Austin, John Cena, face Roman Reigns, etc.).

GOOD- Drew McIntyre beat Goldberg to retain his WWE Championship

This was a quick match, as expected, that made both guys look double tough. McIntyre hit a couple Claymores and got the pin.

GOOD- Sasha Banks beat Carmella to retain her Smackdown Women’s Championship

They went back and forth for a while, with Banks getting the upper hand more often but Reginald distracting her enough to keep Carmella in it. He got kicked out of ringside, though, and Banks made Carmella tap out to retain. Good match.

GOOD- Bianca Belair won the Women’s Royal Rumble

Jillian, Victoria, Torrie Wilson, Mickie James, and Alicia Fox made their returns, as did Lana. It came down to Rhea Ripley and Bianca Belair. They wrestled a while before Belair eliminated Ripley to win the match. Belair was the third entrant into the match, so she lasted a very long time. I love the Rumble matches and I’m not doing justice to this one but it’s better to just watch them if you can. This was a very good match that I would highly recommend. I do wonder who Belair will challenge, though? Asuka is a face, as is Sasha Banks. Hell, Io Shirai is a face, though I’m pretty sure they won’t have her challenge for the NXT Women’s Title. They don’t really have anything for Asuka right now, so I imagine she’s the most likely one to lose to Belair at WrestleMania, but you never know for sure.

GOOD- Roman Reigns beat Kevin Owens to retain his WWE Universal Championship

Everyone knew Reigns would retain but this was still a fun match. They brawled all throughout the arena. They even did a spot where Reigns was going to lose, as he was handcuffed and couldn’t stand, so he knocked the referee out to avoid losing. Later, he choked out Owens to win.

GOOD- Edge wins the Men’s Royal Rumble

Edge was the first entrant so he went coast to coast. Carlito, Kane, The Hurricane, and Christian made their returns, as did Seth Rollins. It came down to Edge and Rollins and Edge eliminated him but then Orton made his return out of nowhere after being injured earlier. Edge still eliminated him, though. Drew McIntyre is a face, so it’s more likely that Edge will challenge Roman Reigns and be used to put Reigns over to end Night 1. I don’t think there’s a chance they have Edge challenge for the NXT Title, he would make Finn Balor look even more like a midget wrestler. And I know WWE always has a face winning to end WrestleMania so I guess Bianca Belair and Asuka will be the main event on Night 2? With Belair going over? I don’t know, this seems most likely but WWE might have a surprise planned.
